Our MD, Petra Deja’s journey to success

Petra Deja’s journey as a hospitality manager started in 1977 when she enrolled at the Technikon Witwatersrand Hotel School. She graduated with a National Diploma Hotel Management in 1979 after which she joined Holiday Inn until 1985 and Fedics Food Services until 1988.

Her first appointment as General Manager was in 1988 at the Protea Hotel Algoa, Port Elizabeth where her performance lead to the Protea Hotels Hospitality Award in 1990.

In 1991 she took up the position as General Manager Protea Hotel Knysna and in 1993 was recognized by the Knysna business community as the Knysna Business Woman of the Year.

In 1994 Petra was appointed as General Manager of the Capetonian Hotel in Cape Town and consistent with her track record, was awarded Protea Hotels General Manager of the Year in 1995.

In pursuit of self-development, Petra graduated from Cornell University Summer School in 1996 and in 1998 became the General Manager of the Protea Hotel President in Cape Town.

Her career took a huge step forward with her promotion as Regional Manager in 2002 and in 2008 achieved the Protea Hotels Golden Circle Award. By 2009, Petra’s expertise paved the way towards her appointment as Protea Hotel Operations Manager, Namibia.

In 2010 the University of Johannesburg School of Tourism and Hospitality honoured Petra for her outstanding contribution to the growth and development of the South African Tourism and Hospitality Industry.

Petra worked her way back to South African where she took up General Manager positions at the Protea Hotel Upington and the Protea Hotel Hunters Rest in Rustenburg.

In May 2018 she was approached by Grant MacLachlan, chairman of Fortis Hotels to take up the position as Managing Director, which she duly accepted.
